
Understanding Shift Knob Adapters for Your Hot Rod
You've spent countless hours perfecting your ride, from the roar of the engine to the gleam of the chrome. Every detail matters, and the shift knob is no exception. It's not just a functional piece; it's a critical touchpoint that connects you to your machine, reflecting your style and passion.
Unfortunately, there is no standard shift stick thread size, so most knob installations require a shift knob adapter.
Gennie Shifter's Thread Basics:
Gennie Shifter chose 16 mm – 1.5 threads for almost all of our knobs. (Check the product listing.) You just need to figure out the stick thread size.
· If you are buying a Gennie Shifter Stick, that’s easy. Our Stainless Perfect Shift Stick have 5/16 – 18 threads, so you need the 16 mm – 1.5 to 5/16 – 18 adapter.
· Our Tremec stick that are designed for manual transmissions have a 3/8 – 16 threads, so you need the 16 mm – 1.5 to 3/8 – 16 adapter.
· Our Aluminum Commander Sticks have beefier 7/16 – 20 threads, so you need a 16 mm – 1.5 to 7/16 – 20 adapter.
Other Applications
If you have a manual transmission stick from your vehicle manufacturer, you may be able to find the thread in the list below this article.
If you have the original knob, you can take it into a hardware store like Lowes, Home Depot, or Ace. Most of these stores will have a nut and bolt testing station. If you don’t have the knob, then you may be able to take the stick or a nut that fits on the stick to one of these stores.
If you do quite a bit of adapting shift sticks to shift knobs, we recommend you buy a “nut and bolt thread size checker in metric and SAE.” We take one of these to shows to help people find the best fit fast.
